Bana, altindischer Dichter, * etwa 585, ✝ etwa 650; einer der größten Meister der Sanskritprosa; der erste Poet der Sanskritliteratur, der im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern Ashvaghosha und Kalidasa einige biographische Angaben über sich selbst machte. Als bereits mit 14 Jahren verwaister Brahmanensohn führte er ein bewegtes Leben. Schließlich wurde er Hofpoet bei König Harshavardhana (606-647) und beschrieb in einem panegyrischen historischen Roman »Harshacarita« (unvollendet) die »Taten des Harsha«. Das zweite Werk, der Roman »Kadambari«, über die Liebe zwischen der Titelheldin und einem Prinzen, wurde vom Sohn Banabhattas nach dessen Tod zu Ende geführt.
